Social media trends to watch out for in 2020

Want to switch up your marketing this year? You need to be aware of trends that could work for your marketing plan. These are some top trends to watch out for!

Social Media feeds to remove the ‘like’ function

For a long time, ‘likes’ on social media have an indicator of the popularity of a post, making them pivotal for social media influencers. In 2019, Instagram Australia removed publicly displayed ‘likes’ and it’s likely this feature will now be removed globally from the app. But what does this mean for companies using the platform for advertising?

Recent research has shown that this form of interaction on social media platforms isn’t actually deemed as being ‘meaningful’ – which is a key focus for social right now. It’s likely Instagram won’t be the last social media platform to install this kind of change with the spotlight on cyber bullying and internet safety.

Video based marketing is king

This is no secret – Youtube has been big news for years and we all know how addictive it can be. But image and video based marketing is now key in holding someone’s attention. Creating relevant GIFs and videos that showcase your company can increase your appeal.

If you’re creating videos, keep them short and straight to the point. Anything too long and self-indulgent will ultimately make your customers switch off.

Influencer marketing will continue to take hold

Influencers are a fantastic marketing tool and can add credibility to any business. Yet, as with any marketing, consumers are now wary of an influencer endorsing too many brands. We’re becoming a wary bunch and in the same way we consume reviews from various sources, we also do our research when it comes to brand endorsements.

Sprout Social has a great blog on influencers which explains a little more about it’s effect on digital marketing.

Increased community interaction

We used to be able to post anything onto social media feeds and it didn’t matter – it was content and ticked a box. But, now customers want businesses that interact with them without bombarding them. Take the time to interact with your target audience – understand what their wants and needs are and incorporate that into your marketing.

TikTok

OK – I can hear the collective sigh from here. TikTok is a kids app – but many of the apps and websites we rely on for our marketing needs once started out as a craze with the kids. I’m not saying TikTok will become business oriented like other platforms, but it’s one to keep abreast of if your business likes to have a little bit of fun with it’s marketing.
