Social media trends for 2021

Events of the past year have made social media more important than ever, for both work and play. More people are at home spending time on social media and now is the ideal opportunity to ensure you’re reaching more people than before.

But how? Here are some trends sent to be essential to social in 2021.

Clubhouse

You might not have heard about it yet, but Clubhouse is the audio social media app the ‘cool gang’ are going crazy for. Not just anyone can join the app currently – the creators are keeping it exclusive and it’s strictly invite only.

Once you’re in, you can earn invites by giving back to the platform, for example by creating events in conversation rooms, where people can listen in. Think of it as a conference call where others can listen in and learn. There are a handful of famous folk currently using it and the platform is only set to get bigger and better.

Clubhouse is due to be released to everyone from 2022, but keep your eyes peeled…

Content quality over quantity

It has been the golden rule for social media for a long time now, yet it’s still widely ignored.

Never post content for content’s sake.

Create the kind of content your audience wants to read and engage with and not what you think they want to engage with. It’s far better to post once a month with a quality post, rather than every day with content that isn’t relevant.

Visual posts are staying on top

This next point isn’t brand new information either, but something you should be aiming for in all of your content. Ensure what you’re posting is visual, rather than a block of words. If your audience can engage – all the better!

This is easily achieved with a mix of videos and images to break up a feed, and providing information in chunks. Save that for your blogs.

The strength of TikTok goes on

The ongoing debate about whether TikTok is a platform for ‘professional’ marketers rumbles on. For me, that’s irrelevant. Particularly during the past year, the popularity of the app has only grown and some of the very best gifs and videos of the past year have been created on there.

If you’ve got a company suitable for the platform, ignore it at your peril.

Go live and keep it real

Brands and influencers are really pushing ‘live’ content right now and it shows a real person and face behind a concept. If you want to reach people, show them who you are! It can be daunting, but create a topic of conversation and make it an event your audience can’t miss. Whether it’s reviewing one of your top products, launching an exciting development or a Q&A – go live.

With more platforms creating designated areas for live content, it’s only going to get bigger so make 2021 the year you take the plunge!
